Micheletto found himself at the barracks of the Papal Army, the Castel St. Angelo. He supposed he worked for the Pope now, doing God's work, and he was quite impressed when he was taken to a tour down the dungeons and torture chambers. Plenty of room to do God's work in. He had no need to exercise 'that' particular area of his expertise yet, and so he found himself above ground, training on iron dummies with his sword.

Micheletto was generally left to his own devices, as he did not fall anywhere within the Papal Army hierarchy and it was very awkward for any of the men to command or obey him. He did not know any of these men, and generally he steered clear of their drills and exercises, preferring to use the training area only when it was vacant.

Cesare knew where to find him. “You should come join me. It is boring practising by myself,” the condottiero had said to Cesare. If the newly-minted Cardinal could find some time away from his religious duties, he might meet Micheletto there, waiting for him with his sword.

A rematch is long overdue, Micheletto thought to himself. When they first met, Cesare had proved to be deft with the blade, and Micheletto had been kicking himself at how easily he had let the other man put a dagger to his throat. If it was someone else he would have been dead – granted, he had managed to turn the tables at the end, but it was a mistake that Micheletto did not want to make again.

Micheletto's sword was nothing fancy – it was trusty and practical, and in a price range that he could afford. Its handle was long enough to accommodate a two-handed grip, yet its blade was weighted in such a way that it could be wielded by one hand. It was neither a greatsword nor a longsword, hence it was known as a “bastard sword”. The style may be crude but it gets the job done – kind of like Micheletto. Murder may be crude, but it was often the quickest and easiest of the means to achieve an end.

For training, Michele was dressed in a loose white shirt and had his pants tucked into knee-high boots. Ever since working for the Borgias, the assassin had felt the need to hone his skills more than ever. Cesare, he knew, was a man who could get into all sorts of trouble. It was his duty to protect him, and to do that, he needed to be quicker than the man himself.

Micheletto Corella
~ Rome, Italy ~ 27 ~ Condottiero ~

First Name: Micheletto
Last Name: Corella
Nickname/Alias: Micheletto Coreglia, Michele de Corella, Miguel de Corella, Don Michele or Don Miguel
Gender: Male
Birthdate: 15 October
Place of Residence: Rome
Social Class: Middle Class
Occupation: Condottiero (Assassin)
Sexual Orientation Homosexual
Play-By: Richard Madden

Appearance

Height: 6'
Hair Color: Dark brown
Hair Length: Slightly shorter than shoulder-length
Eye Color: Blue
Scars/Tattoos/Distinguishing Marks: Countless battle scars and one faint dueling scar on his brow
Overall General Appearance: Micheletto is well-built and athletic, and is on the tall end of average height. His hair is of a dark brown colour, short and sitting in loose, natural curls on top of his head. He has blue eyes, permanently cold, and no smile could ever warm them.

The condottiero is somewhat handsome, in a dangerous kind of way. He moves with a deadly grace; and on his hands are callouses from swordplay, on his body are scars from countless fights and skirmishes engaged in over the years. His dueling scar shows up as a break of hairless skin, about a millimetre wide, on the corner of his left brow. His square jaw is outlined with a short, trimmed beard, and a dark stubble of facial hair covers the lower half of his cheeks, his upper lip and a strip of skin down the midline of his chin.

Micheletto dresses in dark colours as it helps him blend in. He wears a long-sleeved shirt, with a plain leather doublet covering his torso, laced up at the front and fastened by a belt. His breeches end at his knees, and are tucked into black, tall riding boots. Occasionally he wears a cloak - black and reaching the length of his shins - which does a fine job of concealing the 35-inch bastard sword that he wears sheathed around his waist.

Personality

Overall Personality: Micheletto was born with certain character traits that allowed him to thrive in the violent and tumultuous times that is the Italian Renaissance. His sociopathy is equal parts the result of nature and nurture. Growing up as the son of a poor peasant farmer, he did what he must to survive, and had become desensitised to murder and violence due to the environment that he had found himself in. The first person that Micheletto killed was his father, and after that he never looked back. The assassin loves his job, and views killing just like he does any other task. He derives satisfaction from it in the way of a man who is skilled in his job and proud of his accomplishments. A man likes to know that his skills are valued, and if his is murder and torture, so be it.

Micheletto is not a leader but a loyal follower. He has no ambitions of his own and finds working for a worthy employer to be the most fulfilling. He is a man of few words and prefers to let his sword do the talking. Micheletto is capable of feeling compassion for certain people, mainly the weak and the downtrodden, but so far he has never let his emotions get in the way of his job.

The condottiero is stealthy and patient. He prides himself in the method and efficiency of his murders – his preferred method of killing is strangulation, but he is also equally skilled in sword fighting and poison. His violence is cold and calculated, impersonal and barely coloured by emotion. Unlike his father, Micheletto is rarely seen losing his temper. He doesn't care for most things, and is rarely moved to make rash decisions.

Micheletto doesn't feel like he has time for romance, and hence he satisfies his sexual urges in male brothels and has short-term trysts with men of similar inclinations. There is only one person that he truly has feelings for, that he knows will never be returned.
Flaws: Likes torture and murder, has difficulty empathising with people, bad at situations that require diplomacy and social skills
Secrets: It is probably an open secret that Micheletto is a homosexual. No one says it to his face though because Micheletto also has a reputation of being a murderer. His lesser-known secret is that he harbours unrequited love for his master, Cesare.
Goals/Aspirations: Micheletto is driven by his loyalty to Cesare. He likes Cesare because he recognises that deep down, Cesare is just like him. He wants to see the son of the Pope succeed and he is willing to do anything to make this happen.

Character History

General History:
Micheletto had two siblings (that he knew of), both of whom died when they were very young due to disease and historically high infant mortality rates. He barely had any memory of them, and was raised pretty much as an only son. He grew up in a small farm in the countryside of Forli.

Micheletto was the son of a farmer, a crude and violent man who would fly into rage at the slightest of provocations. His father would get into fights all around town, and was once accused of raping a village girl. Micheletto could believe it, having seen the pleasure in his father's eyes when he had beaten a man half to death, and having seen the way he treated his mother, not as a human being but as property, to be used and discarded as he pleased.

Micheletto learned from his father that violence was the go-to solution for any and all problems. He had his first taste of blood when he watched his father butcher a goat at the age of four – and he'll always remember watching life bleed out from the goat, as the animal struggled and finally laid still. Then he learned how to kill and skin an animal from his father, and as he grew older it became one of his regular chores at the farm. He found himself looking forward to it, because killing an animal with his hands gave him a sense of control that he never had in his own life.

When he was young, mercenaries would often come to the countryside to rob/rape/murder the common people. It was merely a fact of life in the war-torn city states. The strong take what they can and the weak perish. Micheletto, out of necessity, learned to defend himself and his mother when his father was too drunk or too cowardly to pick up his sword.

Micheletto saw that his father was a bully, in that he only picked on the weak and the people who were unable to defend themselves. The mercenaries were bullies too, picking on defenceless farmers just because they could get away with it. Micheletto learned that to survive, he must become cruel and unflinching, just like them.

When he was a teenager, he was caught fooling around with a farm boy by his father, who called him a sodomite and threatened to denounce him to the whole village. Micheletto did not hesitate to put a knife through his father's throat. The world is really better off without a vile man such as his father. And from then on, killing only became easier for Micheletto. He knew that he did not want to be stuck in the countryside and end up as a poor farmer like his father. And so he left his mother in the care of his uncle, and told her that he was going to away to study to become a doctor.

Micheletto travelled with a group of mercenaries that ended up in Valencia. It was in Valencia that he began to make a name for himself, among the underworld and those seeking to hire the services of a contractor. Therefore Micheletto became at times known as Don Miguel or Miguel de Corella, and many more mistake his origins as to be from Valencia. Micheletto, of course, never sought to correct them, as he preferred to be thought of as an exotic Spaniard rather than the son of a poor farmer from Forli.

Don Michele worked alone or with groups, taking various jobs with no loyalties beyond the coin and himself. He travelled to Rome when he was hired by Orsini to poison the new Pope... the rest is history.

Writing Sample: There are times in a man's life when he stares down a fork in the road – choose one, and he will go back to how he always was, content and never knowing any better; choose the other, and his life will never be the same. Micheletto felt that he was standing before one such moment. He felt the same when he was fourteen years old, clutching a hunting knife in his hand, trembling (with fear? excitement?) as he drew it across his father's throat, spilling his blood as if he was some animal. He felt it when he met Cesare for the first time – the brush of fate – and he knew that it was his destiny to follow Cesare Borgia. His fortune would be irrevocably entwined with his master's, and he would rise as he rises and fall as he falls.

He was not usually so quick to betray an employer. Micheletto had a reputation to maintain - as he was known to be loyal - but he made an exception for Cesare. He would find himself making exceptions for Cesare time and time again.

He said, “God has delivered me to your hands. You can do with me anything as you please.” He grinned – at the idea of it, of putting your life in someone's hands. When they were in the cell he handed Cesare the whip – it was two weeks later and he could still feel the sting of the wounds upon his back.

Michele was dressed in servant's garbs. He could usually afford something nicer on his condottierro's salary, but when one was dressed as a servant one was effectively invisible. It was so easy for the upper classes to start considering servants as furniture, and for their gaze to just slide off you when you were skulking around in the background, up to no good. He was going out to the town to meet Cesare – there was no doubt that the bastard son of the Pope was up to another one of his plans, one of which he could help set in motion.
